An online generative workshop series for Blacks, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC)
DATE TBA SOON
Let's re-record the narrative! Give a new, fresh voice to re-tell our history, our way! In this workshop, I will take you through what I learned in my research for my book, "Resurrecting the Bones: Born from a Journey Through African American Churches & Cemeteries in the Rural South."
Whether you're writing poetry, a short story, a novel, or creative non-fiction, I will provide tools that will inspire you to dig a little deeper...into your creative genus, archives/historical documents, what you know, and what you think you know already.
By researching and writing, we are making ourselves whole and providing a space for others to do the same by bearing witness to our story. This is spiritual, healing work in which we will combine genealogy and creative writing with a foundation from our past but also with the wisdom of beginning anew.
In this four-week generative class, we will read selected work, share our reflections, write and share our own work, and begin a journey that I hope will take you into the next chapter of your life.
Week 1: "Why are we here?"
We will discuss your inspiration. Is it hope, or frustration? Both? Something else? What tools and materials do you need to pack for the journey? What questions do you need to ask of yourself and others? How will you stay grounded and committed to the process (even after the 4 weeks)?
Week 2: "Stories past"
We will look at various storytellers. And examine who has been telling our story, how, and what do you want to correct and why.
Week 3: "I know the why but what's the 'how'?"
We examine and share how to best tell the story you now know. Is it poetry, a play, a short story or novel? What's the container? How do you begin? What's the plan? What else is needed?
Week 4: "Stories now"
We will wrap up our time sharing our edited or new pieces as it relates to what we've learned and discussed during the month. This is also the time to come with any burning questions that haven't been addressed at this point. You will leave with resources to continue on the journey, an invitation to continue with 1:1 coaching with me (at a discounted rate), and how to stay connected with each other.
