early bird ends - may 1

Let's re-record the narrative! Give a new, fresh voice to re-tell your history, your way! In this workshop, Jacinta White will take you through what she learned in her research for my book, "Resurrecting the Bones: Born from a Journey Through African American Churches & Cemeteries in the Rural South."
Whether you're writing poetry, a short story, a novel, or creative non-fiction, you will be provided tools that will inspire you to dig a little deeper...into your creative genus, archives/historical documents, what you know, and what you think you know already.
By researching and writing, we are making ourselves whole and providing a space for others to do the same by bearing witness to our story. This is spiritual, healing work in which we will combine genealogy and creative writing with a foundation from our past but also with the wisdom of beginning anew.
In this four-week interactive and generative class, we will read selected work curated by Jacinta, share reflections, write and share our own work, and begin a journey that will take you into the next chapter. Each session will provide inspiration, poignant questions to consider, time for writing and sharing.
Week 1: "Why are we here?"
Let's get grounded. In this first session, we will discuss your inspiration. Are you researching and writing out of hope or frustration? Both? Something else? What tools and materials do you need to "pack" for the journey? What questions do you need to ask of yourself and others? How will you stay grounded and committed to the process (even after the 4 weeks)? Whose story are you telling and why?
Week 2: "Stories past"
We will look at various storytellers and examine who has been telling your story, how, and what do you want to correct and why. How do you incorporate oral history in your writing? Where does fact-checking come in? Let's talk about research methods, platforms and where research and art meet.
Week 3: "Whose voice are you listening to?"
We examine and share the various voices that come in writing the ancestors. How can you tune into what's being told? How do you honor your voice and the voices of others and what spiritual practices are most helpful for the journey?
Week 4: "Stories now"
We will wrap up our time sharing our pieces pieces based on in-class writing and homework. This is also the time to come with any burning questions that haven't been addressed at this point. You will leave with resources to continue on the journey, an invitation to continue with 1:1 coaching with Jacinta (at a discounted rate), and how to stay connected with each other, your ancestors and your writing.
