You might be wondering...
Well, let me help you address some of your concerns by first saying that generally when we're ready to dig deeper, explore your inner world, change our life... fear rears its head! Your questions are legitimate so let me answer them before talking a little about fear.
How much time will I have to give up? Yes, fully participating in a series will require a time commitment. But, as with anything else we want, taking the time that's required is worth the sacrifice. One of the pluses for the online, self-paced series is that you can do the readings and exercises at your own pace and in your own time! The convenience of both types of online classes allows you to join us from wherever you are. The question for me then becomes, why not take the time to do something that will bring your clarity, joy, and a pathway to greater healing?
What if I'm doubt about the process? It's completely natural to question if something new will help (or even something you've tried before that didn't work then). I can tell you from my personal experience and working with hundreds of others over the past 19 years that meaningful, deep writing and reflection certainly help in moving us from pain to purpose. (And there is medical research that backs this up, too.) Wring, clarity, creativity, healing are all a process and come when we take the time and effort to be honest with ourselves, and commit to taking the steps to move forward. Writing can be scary if it's not something we do, It can also be exhilorating and life-giving. I know.
What if I'm not a writer? No worries. Most of my workshops aren't just for "writers." It's for those who want and need to do something different to get different results -- whether you're a writer or not. It's for those who are serious about their inner and outward journey. It's for those who want to have a deeper understanding of their pain and their purpose. Of course we will be writing but you don't have to consider yourself a writer to fully engage. And for those who come with a great deal of experience as a writer, don't worry, there will be enough depth to keep you engaged as well.
Do I need to like poetry? It helps :-) but you don't have to love poetry or be an avid poetry reader to benefit from these workshops! I'm not kidding. I can't even tell you the number of persons who come into one of my workshops saying they don't like poetry yet leave fans. I'm not going to try to convert you to becoming a poetry lover. That's not my purpose. I have found that those who tend to not appreciate poetry, however, is because they don't understand it. Poetry can have a way of intimidating people. We won't look at poetry from a mechanical standpoint (except for, maybe in our "live" group classes). Instead, most of the workshops are designed to allow you to experience poetry in your own way (don't worry, I will guide you if you're new at this). No judgement here. And the poetry I use will be assessable, easy to get into, while also surprising and layered.
I feel guilty about taking the time and spending the money. Believe it or not, you deserve time for self-reflection and creativity. We are each creative beings and when we disconnect from that essence we miss hearing our voice and living our truest life. Whether it's money, time or space, we have to decide that our inward gaze is a priority, knowing it will benefit so many other areas of our life. There's nothing to feel guilty about when it comes to prioritizing our inner gifts and nurturing the inner-self. You will feel better when you give yourself the gift of your own attention. Not in a neurotic way but in one that will help you show up in your life as the true you and not a programmed, drained or distracted version of yourself. You will know when you're ready. And when you are, I will be here.
But I'm nervous. That makes sense! Digging deep into yourself and sharing your authentic self is a challenging and vulnerable task -- whether you're doing this work in the privacy of your home or in community with our live group sessions. What's at the root of your nervousness? Is it a true story or one that is on auto-play? Do you believe the reward will be better than the risk? Are you willing to see?
All of these are serious questions that truly only you can answer. This may not be the time for you if you are overwhelmed by fear. If you are under medical care or seeing a psychologist or counselor, I recommend that you seek their opinion before taking courses. Truth can be scary but that's usually when it's stuck inside of our heads and not when it's out on paper. Speaking our truth is what often sets us free.
- I don't have time
- I can do the writing/work without a workshop
- I'm not a writer
- Writing can wait
- I don't even like poetry
- Will it really help
- I can't afford it
