“Re-Membering”

poetry writing workshops for everyday people

Jacinta has gained experience in leading others in poetry writing workshops for the last seven years. The “Re-Membering” Project focuses on using poetry to stimulate elders’ memories. Jacinta also leads older adults in capturing these memories in poetry or verse form, which is later often shared with their family, often giving elders a growing sense of peace and fulfillment.

The “Re-Membering” Project brings individuals together to engage in peer conversation, group writing, and individual writing exercises. For those who are not able to write due to physical or mental difficulties, Jacinta writes the poem on the person’s behalf based on conversation, and presents it to the person. These poems make great gifts for family members and dear friends.

In 2008, Jacinta was the project coordinator for the Greensboro Public Library’s “LifeVerse” Project where she led the volunteer based project of taking poetry into environments where elders live and play. More than 300 elders participated resulting in more than 50 group and 75 individual poems created. Jacinta is the editor of the LifeVerse Anthology.

With her work with Hospice, the Adult Center for Enrichment and Senior Resources as a workshop facilitator and presenter, Jacinta has shown a great sensitivity and knowledge in working with elders and caregivers.
